Police stop man who drove from Huddersfield to see family in Sheffield, as coronavirus fines in a single neighbourhood near 40

Officers in Parson Cross said the driver of a Toyota Aygo was stopped on Cookson Road and was found to be uninsured and without a valid driving licence. They said he now faces court, the loss of his vehicle and a fine.

Sergeant Scott Sarson said the Parson Cross policing team had now issued 39 fines to people flouting the coronavirus restrictions and had taken 21 vehicles off the road so far this year.

Police have been given powers to hand out a £60 penalty, which is reduced to £30 if paid within two weeks, for breaches of the Government's restriction of movement rules.

South Yorkshire Police revealed its officers had issued 258 such lockdown fines between March 27 and April 27, during which period more than 9,000 were handed out to people across England and Wales.
