Police issue statement after officer finds child carrying a KNIFE into school

A knife was seized from a child was found carrying the blade into lessons in a South Yorkshire school, it has been revealed.

The pupil, whose age or sex have not been disclosed, attends a school in Barnsley.

South Yorkshire Police has shared a photograph of an officer with the blade to highlight the work being carried out as part of a nationwide initiative, Operation Sceptre, which aims to tackle knife crime by reducing the number of people carrying weapons.

The force said: “Whilst carrying out work in a school within the wider Barnsley district, a pupil was highlighted to have been carrying a knife to school.

“Another knife off our streets whilst also educating young people about the danger of carrying such objects.”

Officers in Sheffield are carrying out searches in the city to root out those walking the streets armed and to look for weapons which may have been hidden or discarded, to prevent them falling into the wrong hands.
