South Yorkshire Police lifted a cordon around Mapplebeck Road in High Green last night, allowing families back in after more than a day in which they were kept away because of safety concerns.

But police remain on the scene today.

There was a 100m cordon around the house, while army bomb disposal experts carried out checks in part of the property.

A number of roads were sealed off until around 6pm last night.

Seventy homes were within the cordon, with hundreds of residents affected.

Police said last night: “While the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Team has confirmed there is no longer a risk to nearby homes, the investigation into potential explosive substances is ongoing.”

Officers have thanked residents for their co-operation.
