Sheffield Wednesday state intentions over red card appeal against Blackpool

The Owls conceded late on to draw against Blackpool

Sheffield Wednesday may appeal Sil Swinkels’ red card against Blackpool.

With The Owls leading 1-0 through Davis Keillor-Dunn’s excellent first-half opener, the returning Swinkels was given his marching orders after he was deemed to be the last man after hauling down Tom Bloxham before the break in what turned out to be a lively encounter.

The decision changed the game as Wednesday were dominating but they had to change their approach in the second 45 and unfortunately they conceded with nine minutes remaining when former Owl Jerry Yates prodded underneath Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who will probably feel he should have done better.

New Owls boss Dave Challinor was in the stands. His appointment is set to be officially announced on Monday.

On the red card decision, interim boss Matt Hamshaw said: “I was worried at beginning, if I'm going to be honest. Last man, but going away from goal. Would he (Bloxham) have scored? There's a number of questions that would be asked. Touch obviously went away from goal, not towards goal. But, at the same time, initial thought was, well, he is the last man. But look, the referee's made a decision. we can't change that once it's happened.

“I thought the players saw the game gone out really well. We could have been a little bit better in transition. I don’t know who kept telling the players to shoot from 70 yards every time we got the ball! I thought our tidy-up passes should have been a little bit better.I am just disappointed not to win.”

On whether they might appeal, he added: “It may well be. Yeah, may well be. We'll obviously come together as a group of staff. Obviously, new gaffer. See what he wants to do with that, and we'll take that on.”

The draw leaves Wednesday ninth in League One, two points outside the play-offs. Challinor’s first game in charge is set to be next Sunday’s FA Cup clash away at Oldham Athletic.
