The latest footage shows police officers restraining a man on the ground while a large, animated crowd gathered around them.

A member of the Firth Park Neighbourhood Network, which campaigns for improvements in the area, said soldiers are needed on every street in Page Hall until behaviour improves and Covid-19 social distancing measures are respected.

Page Hall has a large Roma population and police officers have posted leaflets to all homes explaining about coronavirus.

“This must be the fourth such brawl recently,” the Firth Park Neighbourhood Network member said.

“There is screaming and shouting constantly and large groups in the streets at all times of the day and night. It is an absolute nightmare for people who have lived here all their lives but who are too scared to leave their homes because of all the people standing around in groups.

“The police are doing all they can with the numbers they have and the council have got funding for wardens, but more action is needed – the army has to be brought in. We need soldiers on every street until law and order is restored and people start respecting social distancing.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to reports of a disturbance involving a man and a small group of people on Wade Street in Page Hall at around 3am this morning.

“Officers attended and detained a 27-year-old man on suspicion of public order offences.

“He remains in custody.

“The disturbance had attracted a number of onlookers, who were swiftly dispersed by our officers.”
