Man and woman bailed by South Yorkshire Police after arrest over death of baby girl

A man and woman have been bailed by South Yorkshire Police after being questioned over the death of a baby girl.

The 31-year-old woman and 38-year-old man, both from Athersley, Barnsley, were arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a four-month-old baby girl on Monday, September 14.

Police were called to Barnsley Hospital on May 16 after reports that a baby had suffered ‘catastrophic injuries’.

The baby never recovered from those injuries and her life support was withdrawn.

A post mortem examination was carried out this week and the cause of death was ‘unascertained, pending further medical enquiries’.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge said: “We have a dedicated team of officers assigned to this investigation.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “The man and woman arrested in connection with this incident were released on police bail yesterday evening while the investigation continues.
