Investigation into police officer who used baton against Sheffield Wednesday fan is completed

An investigation into a police officer who used a baton against a 16-year-old boy is complete, it has been confirmed.

A Sheffield Wednesday fan was left bleeding from the head after the incident, which took place as trouble flared between rival fans following the Owls’ derby against Barnsley at Oakwell on 8 February.

The incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which investigates the most serious complaints against police in England and Wales.

The officer involved was placed on restricted duties pending the outcome of the IOPC’s criminal and misconduct investigations.

An IOPC spokesperson did not say when the investigation’s findings would be released publicly.

They said: “We have now finalised our investigation report which has been shared with South Yorkshire Police.

"Once this process is complete and we have shared our findings with other interested parties we will consider releasing further details from our investigation.”

South Yorkshire Police declined to comment.
