“We are committed to securing justice for the victim and ensuring dangerous offenders are off our streets, but while we can be anywhere, we can’t be everywhere, and we know answers lie within our communities, the force said.

Superintendent Martin Simcock added: “Gun crime, and violent crime has no place in South Yorkshire, and the fact that a young boy is fighting for his life is appalling and will not be tolerated.

“Detectives, officers and forensics have been in the area today to secure evidence, but we need your help.

“I urge you to get in touch, no matter how small you believe your information to be, it could be the missing piece that we need.

“This boy and his family deserve answers, and we are committed to getting them.”
