Joey Barton's assault case listed at Sheffield Crown Court today

Former England footballer Joey Barton’s assault case is listed for a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court today.

Barton, who is now the manager of Fleetwood Town, is accused of assaulting former Barnsley FC manager Daniel Stendel when their two sides met at Oakwell last April.

Barton, aged 37, who denies the charge and is due to stand trial, is accused of assaulting Mr Stendel following a League One match.

A provisional trial date of June 1 was set at an earlier hearing, but it is not due to go ahead today.

Barton’s attendance at court has been excused.

The ex-England midfielder, of Fox Bank Close, in Widnes, Cheshire, played for Manchester City, Newcastle and Burnley player during his football career.

He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily following an incident in the tunnel after Barnsley beat Fleetwood 4-2.

He has been granted unconditional bail ahead of his trial.
