As of Friday morning, 318 signatures had been added to the petition, which calls for action from South Yorkshire Police and MPs on thieves stripping parts from cars, typically Vauxhall Corsas and Volkswagen Golfs.
Known as ‘Corsa Cannibals’, the thieves tend to strip parts from cars at night and there have been a number of incidents over recent months.
The online petition states: “Car parts crime within Sheffield and the surrounding areas is increasing at an alarming rate with specific models of cars being targeted for their parts, often Golf and Corsa bumpers.
“It is believed that the thieves will then sell these parts on, most likely online to make a profit.“Sheffield in particular, as well as Chesterfield and Barnsley, have had a high volume of thefts. These criminals are out there targeting vehicles under the cover of darkness and creating thousands of pounds worth of damage to sensors, lights and repairs.
“When these crimes have been reported, many people have felt unsatisfied with the lack of investigation or contact from the police. Most people have seen very little action if any from the police force, despite this rising trend.”
The petition continues: “This has got to stop.
“I strongly feel that if the South Yorkshire Police took the time to launch a full investigation into these crimes and liaised with police forces such as West Yorkshire Police, they would have enough evidence to catch the culprits and restore justice for all the victims, so that people can feel safe again parking their cars at night.
“If you yourself have had this crime happen to you or someone you know, or you just want this kind of crime to stop, then please sign this petition to make South Yorkshire Police and local MP’s listen. There needs to be a full investigation into all the reports of car part theft in South Yorkshire and the surrounding areas to catch the people responsible for this.”
South Yorkshire Police has been contacted for a statement on the issue.
