Armed officers flooded Weakland Drive, Hackenthorpe, yesterday afternoon after reports that a woman and her child were locked in a house.

The alarm was raised at 12.15pm and police negotiators were scrambled to talk to a man in the property believed to have been refusing to allow the woman and child to leave.

They were eventually released, unharmed, and negotiations with the man continued into the night.

South Yorkshire Police said the incident concluded at 7.15pm yesterday.

In a statement this morning, the force said: “A 28-year-old man from Sheffield was detained by police under suspicion of kidnapping by false imprisonment.”

Residents reported police cars, riot vans and a fire engine at the property during the height of the siege.

A police cordon was put in place while officers dealt with the incident yesterday.
