Police chiefs ordered a huge response to organised crime in Sheffield after four shootings in the city in 24 hours.

In two of the incidents in Nether Edge on Friday, May 8, two rival groups opened fire at each other in Machon Bank in broad daylight and just over 30 minutes later a house was fired at on nearby Union Road.

That same day a man was shot when a flat was fired at on Club Garden Road, Sharrow and three men were wounded when a gun was fired at a group stood together in Grimesthorpe Road, Burngreave.

Three weeks before that a 21-year-old man was critically injured in another shooting on Grimesthorpe Road.

In the wake of the shootings, homes have been raided across Sheffield and a number of weapons and drugs worth nearly £500,000 have been recovered.

Over 20 arrests have also been made in connection with the police activity.

South Yorkshire Police said ‘significant police resources remain on the streets of Nether Edge, Sharrow and Burngreave’ and ‘high-intensity enforcement activity’, including more raids, stop searches and vehicle checks ‘will continue in the coming days’.

Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Henderson, responsible for tackling armed criminality, said: “This activity aims to disrupt the criminals we believe are behind incidents like those we saw on May 8.

“This type of work does hit profits and it does disrupt serious organised criminality, ultimately making our streets safer.”

DCI Henderson added: “My appeal to the public remains the same: if you know the people who are behind these recent incidents, listen to your conscience and contact us with any information.

“It is only with your help that we can tackle the roots of organised criminality in our city, if we can do this, we remove violence from our streets.”

Following the shootings in Nether Edge and Sharrow, concerned community group Mums United organised a meeting with police and council chiefs to demand more action.
