Gates close as police patrol crime-ridden Endcliffe Park in Sheffield

Police have closed the main gates to Endcliffe Park in Sheffield after a spike in crime at the site over lockdown.

Officers say the move will help them police the popular park, which has seen a stabbing and a youth brandishing a machete in recent weeks.

Investigations are continuing into the two incidents which were linked to an unlicensed music event on Friday, July 24.

Detective chief inspector Jamie Henderson said: “I understand both of these incidents were distressing, especially at such a prominent and popular green space in our city.

“I also know they were witnessed by other teenagers and I want residents and parents to know that we’re responding robustly.”

It is hoped that closing the gates, off Rustlings Road, will block access for nuisance off-road bikes and prevent other anti-social behaviour.

The gates will remain closed ‘until further notice’.
