Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard today, Thursday, July 30, how Nicholas Wallace, aged 31, of no fixed abode, assaulted the officer after police had been called out to Lupton Walk, Lowedges, Sheffield, concerning an unrelated incident.

Prosecuting solicitor Alison Goldsmith said: “Officers attended and spoke to parties in the course of an unrelated incident and he became irate because he was unable to locate his bank card and he assaulted an officer.”

Ms Goldsmith added police tried to help find the bank card but Wallace became angry and he swung punches towards an officer which are not believed to have connected and the defendant was handcuffed.

However, as he was later escorted away he kicked out with both legs connecting with the officer’s feet and groin area causing pain and discomfort, according to Ms Goldsmith.

Jobless Wallace, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker after the incident on June 27.

Defence solicitor Saleh Alnoud said: “He became restrained and he lashed-out as he was being taken to the police car.”

Mr Alnoud added: “He has never been arrested or convicted for any offences so it’s out of character and he is genuinely remorseful for his behaviour.”

Magistrates sentenced Wallace to a 12-month community order with 50 hours of unpaid work and a ten-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

Wallace must also pay £50 compensation and £85 costs.
