Because the fire was deep seated, diggers had to be brought in to break up the pile of burning scrap to allow water to reach the flames.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Two diggers also remain on scene, allowing crews to reach deep seated fire but there are no longer any visible flames.

“We’re delivering 2,400 litres of water a minute onto the fire.

“Road closures remain in place around Carlisle Street so we are still asking members of the public to avoid the area if possible. Thank you for your continued cooperation.”

Firefighters have been pumping water from the River Don to the scrapyard to tackle the flames.

Environment Agency specialists have been monitoring activity to ensure the local watercourse is not polluted as a result of run-off from the scrap yard.
