Mexborough fire: Family loses everything in New Year's Eve arson attack

A fundraising appeal has been launched to help a South Yorkshire family facing homelessness after a devastating blaze on New Year’s Eve.

The fire broke out on Mexborough High Street yesterday afternoon and at the height of the blaze there were eight fire engines in attendance, along with police and council officials.

The street was closed off for hours as crews battled to bring the blaze under control and investigative work was carried out.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said firefighters left the scene at 10pm.

The organisation said the fire is thought to have been started deliberately.

The blaze involved four shops, one of which is derelict, with flats above.

Today it has emerged that a family “lost everything” in the blaze.

An online GoFundMe appeal, launched by Boyd Taylor states: “On New Year's Eve, my friend Chris Nixon and his three children lost everything when an arsonist set fire to a building connected to their flat on Mexborough High Street.

“They’ve lost their home, clothes, and even their Christmas presents.

“Chris is a devoted single father and a hard worker who is now facing homelessness.

“Please, if you can, donate to help them rebuild. Every little bit helps. Thank you.”
