Government say Brits are risking their freedom by smuggling, as Sheffield man jailed for Thailand drug scheme

“Far too many British nationals are being lured into drug smuggling schemes by criminal gangs that promise free travel or a quick way to make cash”

The Government has issued a stern warning to those considering drug smuggling, with cases quadrupling in recent years.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has warned that those attempting to smuggle drugs across national borders are facing decades in foreign prisons after a spike in cases.

In 2023 there were just over 80 cases of British nationals being arrested abroad for drug offences, compared to more than 340 in 2025 - at least a 325 per cent increase.

So far in 2026 there have been more than 160 cases, with the Government warning of an increase of cannabis-related arrests in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos.

They have warned that young people are being lured into ‘low-risk opportunities’ through social media, being told they’re carrying luggage filled with clothes, gold or cash only to be caught with drugs at the airport.

Their warning has been echoed by British nationals currently detained abroad, with one person detained over cannabis offences saying: “At the end of the day, it's your freedom you're risking, and once it's gone, it's not easy to get back.”

Another said: “When I was told about the job, it made it seem [like] everything will be ok and nothing illegal will happen, and [I would get] to enjoy a free holiday. [...] You start to think about many things and moments you will miss out on. My heart hurts."

Minister for Consular and Crisis, Stephen Doughty MP, said: “Far too many British nationals are being lured into drug smuggling schemes by criminal gangs that promise free travel or a quick way to make cash.

“The reality is very different, and detainees are warning about the dire living conditions they now face decades of in prison or, in some countries, the possibility of the death penalty.

“Organised criminals are only interested in their own profit and do not care about the devastating consequences for the people they recruit.

“Our advice is clear: never carry drugs or items for others. Remember no holiday, payment or opportunity is worth risking your freedom, your future or your life.”

Last year, a man from Sheffield was jailed after he was caught smuggling drugs overseas.

Trelawny Brown, of Leedham Close, Shiregreen, Sheffield, was sentenced to three years and four months in August 2025 for acting as a courier, flying out to Thailand to collect large hauls of cannabis before bringing it back into the country under the radar.

Detective Inspector Simon Drenon from NEROCU (North East Regional Organised Crime Unit) said at the time: “This is a great result for the region and a fierce display of partnership working demonstrating a united front against drug supply.

“We hope this sends a strong message to criminals –no matter where you travel or reside – there is nowhere to hide.”
