2. Jake Billam: Jailed for three years, nine months over campaign of coercive control & violence on September 17, 2026
A domestic abuser’s horrific campaign of coercive control and violence has finally been brought to an end, after the victim bravely came forward. Over a prolonged, four-year period, Jake Billam subjected the complainant to violence, threats and intimidation. The complainant says she was initially concerned about reporting Billam, aged 24, to police, and feared she would not be supported. But after police took her report seriously, she says their response and the investigation that followed has “positively changed her and her young child’s life.” A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said several witnesses, as well as the victim, were interviewed and provided statements about Billam’s abusive behaviour. Further evidence was gathered, including a voice recording of Billam threatening to kill the victim, and several photographs of injuries she had received. Billam was jailed for three years, nine months during a hearing held on Thursday (September 17, 2026), after admitting charges of coercive control and intentional strangulation. | syp

3. Declan Higgins: Jailed for seven years over sex attack on September 10, 2026
Declan Higgins struck at a property in the Lowfields area of the city, subjecting a woman in her 20s to a shocking sex attack in the early hours of the morning. In the wake of the sexual assault, the complainant - who is entitled to lifelong anonymity - took audio recordings. The recordings, along with the description she provided to police a short time after the attack, led to officers catching him that night. Other people in the property also provided information about Higgins which assisted with the investigation. Higgins, aged 37, was subsequently charged with assaulting a female by penetration with a part of body / a thing. Still denying any responsibility, Higgins pleaded not guilty, forcing the victim to relive the harrowing experience at trial. However, following a three-day trial in May 2026, a jury saw through his lies and found him guilty. Appearing at Sheffield Crown Court on September 10, 2026, Higgins, of Great Close, Grantham, was jailed for seven years and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life. | SYP

4. Lee Haigh: Jailed on September 11, 2026 for 55 months over violence and stalking
A despicable domestic abuser who believes he is “entitled” to attack his romantic partners has been jailed for subjecting his ex to a campaign of violence and stalking. Lee Haigh, aged 46, left the complainant terrified after stalking her and making a series of chilling threats. They included telling his victim he would enjoy squeezing the life out of her and threatening to kill her in front of her children. Despite this, Haigh was still given a second chance when the 18-month prison sentence passed down for offences of stalking and malicious communication was suspended for two years. Haigh threw that chance away just two months later in order to continue terrorising the complainant, Sheffield Crown Court heard during a September 11, 2026 hearing. Haigh, of Oxspring Bank, Wadsley Bridge, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the first day of his trial. Judge Wright jailed Haigh for 37 months over the two assaults, and activated his 18-month suspended sentence, bringing his total sentence to one of 55 months’ imprisonment | SYP
