They met on social media in March 2024 and then separated when Sutherland’s ex became pregnant four months later.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that on July 13, he “threw bottles” at the complainant’s home.

During another incident in the same month, he let himself into the house and climbed into bed with his ex and their baby daughter.

On July 18, he followed his ex in his van and jumped out of the vehicle where he threatened to kill her.

Recorder Caroline Goodwin KC told the court that Sutherland said: “If I can’t have you, no-one else will.”

The victim's friend came to help her, and Sutherland was abusive towards her.

The judge said: “She was only there to protect her friend.”

She told the court how the racially aggravated offending was "grossly offensive” and "cowardly behaviour”.

Sam Magee, defending, said in his submissions: “He recognises that he struggles with his interpersonal relationships.”

He said Sutherland “has a level of self awareness” regarding his actions and understands how he “struggles with relationships in his life”.

Mr Magee also told the court that this is the first time Sutherland has ever been in custody before, which has been a “sobering period of time for him”.

He mentioned how he struggles with “mental health difficulties” and that he had “negative childhood experiences”.

Recorder Goodwin described Sutherland’s behaviour "appalling" and “out of control”.

Reading a victim impact statement, she said: “No mother should ever have to experience that level of fear.”

She shared how the complainant felt “trapped and scared”, leaving her to “feel unsafe in her own home”.

Sentencing Sutherland to 26 months in custody, the judge said: “You are an individual who is extremely abusive, frightening and intimidating when you are involved in a relationship.”

He received two months for stalking, one month for common assault, 21 months for threatening to kill and two months for the racial offence.

He was also served with an indefinite restraining order.
