Child struck by car outside primary school in Sheffield

The 10-year-old was involved in a collision outside Westways Primary School, Crookes, at 8.44am yesterday.

South Yorkshire Police said the youngster escaped without any serious injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Sam Fearnehough, Executive Head teacher at the school, said: “An incident did occur yesterday on Mona Avenue.

“A car was being driven very slowly and a child exited from the back seat of a car directly into the path of the vehicle. Luckily the child was not badly injured but taken to hospital as a precaution. 

“Parents have been reminded to park away from the school and walk a short distance to the school gates. We also urge parents and carers to park sensibly and supervise their children exiting the vehicle onto the kerbside. 

“We promote walking or cycling to school wherever possible and remind parents not to drop off children in the middle of the road if they can't find a parking space.”

She added: “Parking services and the police will be in the area to enforce correct parking and we are in contact with the council to discuss any other measures that can be put in place to improve the safety of children on the roads around our school.”
