Cash pours in for Sheffield animal sanctuary targeted by raiders

Bosses at Thornberry Animal Sanctuary have launched an funding appeal to pay for beefed up CCTV at its premises in North Anston after two men scaled the perimeter fence over the weekend and caused damage to the front of the premises.

The pair escaped empty-handed – but following a dog being taken and then sold from another Sheffield animal sanctuary – it is believed the pair may have been looking to steal dogs.

The attempted raid took place at the sanctuary in Todwick Road on Sunday.

A spokesman said: “Shortly before 7.30pm we were alerted to some suspicious activity around our entrance.

"Two men in hoodies and masks, scaled our perimeter fence, helped by donations left piled up outside our gates.

"They were driving a white transit van and have left damage to our grass frontage. Fortunately, we were alerted to their presence and our onsite team disturbed them. They left empty-handed.

"We learned of a Staffy having been stolen from another local rescue centre and with the price of dogs escalating, dog theft is on the rise.

"All of our dogs are microchipped and our kennels safely locked with a security system in place.

"What we now realise is that it is a priority to improve our CCTV system.

"The police need clear pictures to prosecute offenders to bring these people to justice. We have no option but to improve our CCTV around site and it is not going to be cheap. For the safety of our animals, we will do everything we can. If anyone can help with this it would be hugely appreciated.”

The appeal has already raised nearly £3,000.

A spokesman added: “Thank you to everyone for your kind words and donations. As always we are blown away by your love for our animals. It’s horrible that there are the types of people who would target an animal sanctuary, but thankfully there are also people like you.”
