Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, in North Anston, is caring for dozens of animals - including many adorable dogs from haughty Shi Tzus to a characterful Saluki.
If you’re looking for to welcome a new dog into your home, there are so many dogs to choose from in South Yorkshire.
Many of these dogs, of all ages and sizes, have ended up in kennels through no fault of their own, including their beloved owner falling poorly and having to give them up for adoption.
The include beautiful boys like Baloo, a Staffy who the charity says sadly “spent more than half his life locked in a crate with no opportunity to exercise” who just needs a fresh start.
Kennels are always ready to look after a dog, but they’re no place compared to a loving home.
Below we have listed just 15 of the man dogs that come and go looking for homes at Thornberry at the moment. If any of them sound like they could fit into your life, please visit the charity’s website to find out more about the adoption process.

9. Poppy, English Bulldog, 4 years, female
Poppy is a very gentle natured, friendly sweet bulldog who would really benefit from adopters who are familiar with the breed, their traits and health. She has previously been exercised very little and had limited access to outdoors so would thrive in a home with a lovely big garden and access to some nice walking areas. She could live with children aged 10+ and us under further assessment with dogs (potentially live with a neutered male). - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/poppy/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

10. Millie, Bulldog Cross, 7 years, female
Millie is a very gentle, medium sized bulldog cross who given the chance will climb onto the armchairs in our reception area for a cuddle. Sadly she had found herself as an unclaimed stray but has clearly had multiple litters of puppies. She is friendly with new people and comfortable walking with other dogs out and about. She could live with older children 12+ - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/millie/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

11. Whiskey, Patterdale Crossbreed, 6 years, female
"Whiskey is a ‘project dog’ who would thrive in a home with owners committed to the needs of our gorgeous girl. Whiskey has been with us long term, almost half of her life – but we believe there is a home out there for her as she is the most playful, fun and affectionate girl when she has a relationship with you. She is only small in size but incredibly agile, so will need a very secure garden space. Our pocket rocket loves nothing more than a tennis ball and this is the best way to make friends. Whiskey struggles with new people and can be easily overwhelmed and ‘react’. In her previous home (all be it years ago) she was very distressed when left alone which makes her long stay in kennels more and more heartbreaking. She is not comfortable to interact with other dogs and will need access to quiet walking areas. Whiskey does wear a muzzle when in public but is comfortable to do so. She is very good at travelling and is partial to a puppachino with her favourite dog walker. If you feel you could meet the needs of Whiskey please enquire – and note we will not consider any homes with children, pets or in a ‘busy’ area." - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/whiskey/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

12. Simon, Saluki, 1 year 6 months, male
"Simon the Saluki will be an absolutely great addition to an active and fun household. He loves toys and will very happily entertain himself. He is great with other dogs, he does have a vocal and boisterous playstyle (common with the breed) so could live with other dogs compatible with him. We feel is best suited to live with adults and must have a secure garden for fun and games." - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/simon/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary
