Developers show 'firm interest' in converting giant Moorfoot office after city council puts it for sale

Hundreds of new flats could be created

Developers have expressed a “firm interest” in converting Sheffield’s biggest office into hundreds of flats.

In an encouraging update, Sheffield City Council said “a number of” firms were looking at Moorfoot, at the bottom of The Moor.

The authority put it on the market in May.

Some 320 homes are planned in what council chiefs say would become one of the UK’s largest retrofit projects.

The building was deemed surplus to requirements due to council staff continuing to work from home after Covid.

It is now “mostly vacated” with some “nominal staff presence”.

A city council spokesperson said: “Sheffield City Council, Homes England and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority are currently working up proposals to bring forward about 800 new homes at the Moorfoot building and adjacent former Wickes in Sheffield city centre.

“A business case is currently being compiled to secure funding support from the Government’s City Densification Fund, announced in March this year.T

“The opportunity to redevelop the site was presented to the market at the UK REiiF property event in May this year. A developer procurement exercise is currently under way.

“A number of developers have expressed a firm interest in taking the opportunity forward.”

In June, then chancellor Rachel Reeves announced £85m for four ‘stalled sites’ including Moorfoot.

The City Densification Fund money will be administered by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
