So after finishing work one Friday evening and with pangs of hunger in my stomach and the need for an evening out after a long, hard week I did a Google search to look for ‘the best pub in Sheffield’.

Up popped an article on the Sheffield Star website detailing the best boozers in the city based on Google reviews from customers.

One such pub that took my fancy was The Wisewood Inn at Loxley.

There is a quiet buzz about the place in this part of Sheffield with many people declaring it as the best place to get a decent pint in the city.

The food didn’t look half bad either, so off I went with my dining companion.

There is a welcoming atmosphere when you first set foot in the place and it is nicely decorated with some nice rural touches including antler light fittings and chandeliers.

The venue is also sectioned off into a drinking side, and an eating side, which allows for two different gastropub experiences in one.

For starters we went for a shared baked camembert with warm crusty bread. Dipping our breads into the gooey cheese was a sheer delight.

For the main I ordered the meat and potato pie, while my partner had a chicken burger.

The pie was to die for. Crusty pastry with succulent chunks of beef and potato, accompanied by homemade cooked chips.

My partner also enjoyed the chicken burger.

If there's any criticism to be had I would say the number of chips we were presented with was a little over-facing – though I’m nitpicking, the meal as a whole was wholly filling and very satisfying.

We finished off with a very rich tasting chocolate brownie and ice cream.

At about £40 it was very reasonably priced given the quality and quantity of food we were served.

The pub also brews it’s very own ales on site and i would highly recommend the Black Dog – a sweet and roasty milk stout that complimented the pie.

The Wisewood also benefits from a huge beer garden overlooking the majestic rolling hills of the Loxley Valley.

This part of Sheffield, where the city falls away into the Peak District, can lay claim to having many ‘destination pubs’ perfect for a refreshing stop off as part of trip into the countryside.

The nearby Admiral Rodney, Nag’s Head, Plough and Old Horns Inn are all well worth a visit as part of a scenic round walk.

But with it’s heady mix of expertly crafted ales brewed on site, high quality food and beer garden overlooking the rolling green hills, The Wisewood Inn could have a valid claim to being Sheffield’s best rural pub.
