Sweet Temptation Cakes called to the rescue after couple’s wedding cake falls apart on their big day
A Sheffield baker saved the day for a city couple when their wedding cake fell apart on their big day.
Nikkie French, from Sweet Temptation Cakes in Hackenthorpe, had just delivered her final wedding cake of the day on Saturday, August 8 when she received an SOS message from a friend who was attending a wedding.
The messages asked for help and Nikkie was sent a photo of a cake which had been delivered to a couple, which had started to fall apart.
Eager to help, Nikkie and her partner Les went straight back to their baker to gather the appropriate tools , buttercream and a spare cake that was thankfully available.

Nikkie said: “The friend really did not expect us to fix the cake for them, he was only asking for help, but we couldn’t not help this couple out on their special day. The guests had already gone to the church for the wedding, so this put us on more of a time crunch.”
Nikkie said the cake in real life was more shocking than what she was expecting from the photos she had been sent.
The bottom tier had no base board, one wooden skewer served no purpose, plastic flowers had been added instead of real blooms and the cake had been delivered fully assembled, which Nikkie said “is a no no in this heat”.
She said after working quickly, even though the end result was not her normal perfection, they left the venue knowing the bride and groom had something resembling a wedding cake and happy that she had helped prevent a couple’s wedding day from being ruined.
Nikkie shared her story on Facebook and it took off, saying: “I couldn’t believe it, the story had over 1.2 million views.”

In 2015, Nikkie discovered baking as a creative outlet after attending a one-day class.
What began as a hobby quickly became a passion, and wanting to develop her skills she attended further classes across the country to learn from some of the UKs leading cake designers.
By 2017, Nikkie made the bold decision to leave her full time job to pursue her dedication to cakes.
She established her business at Staniforth Works in Hackenthrope, and in just under two years she expanded into a neighbouring unit.
Nikkie specialises in alternative style, 3D sugar paste modelling. Customers recognise her for her realistic models and her attention to detail on every cake she does.
Her team includes Abbie, who she first met when she attended a mother’s day cake decorating class when Abbie was just 11 years old; Debbie, who is now the baker, assistant manager and the heart of the business, and Mia, who first joined helping Abbie working the counter on a Saturday.

Their counter is restocked every week with various treats , with staples such as old school sponge, chocolate fudge cake, brownies, cookie sandwiches and cake slices.
They have a four for £10 deal with tray bakes and a three for £10 deal on cake slices.
Realising that times are hard for people right now, they offer celebration cakes starting at £25.
