Sheffield hospitality business Cornerstone opening coffee shop in city centre because 'it's coming back'

“I think the city centre is coming back. We’ve seen the investment and good operators going in.”
An independent hospitality firm is set to open a coffee shop in Sheffield city centre because “it is coming back.”
Cornerstone cafe is set to open in the old Toni & Guy hairdressers on Pinstone Street, in October. Up to 15 jobs are set to be created.

Boss Richard Massarella said they were influenced by the council’s investment in the city centre and expansion by other independents including Marmadukes, Hygge and Maria restaurant.
But he believed it could be hard in the short-term due to re-paving works outside the premises.
The business includes Cornerstone restaurant in Dyson Place, Sharrow Vale, and Cornerstone Coffee at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster.
Mr Massarella said: “I think the city centre is coming back. We’ve seen the investment and good operators going in and we looked at that pedestrianised stretch overlooking the Peace Gardens and thought ‘this is where we want to be’.

“We’re happy to be one of the independent businesses moving into the city centre from the neighbourhoods.”
Toni & Guy closed more than five years ago.
Mr Massarella said they had been in talks with the landlord for 18 months.
A planning application to make changes for a cafe has been submitted to Sheffield City Council, he added.
