Sheffield Lord Mayor unveils ‘Bridge of Remembrance’ in Weston Park

The white and purple ribbons are each an individual tribute and memory of a loved one and will help people going through cancer.

Weston Park Cancer Charity’s ‘Ribbons of Hope’ tribute was unveiled by The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Andrew Sangar.

The display, located in Weston Park, is made up of purple and white ribbons – each bearing the name of someone special who is no longer with us.

Visitors can find their loved one’s name, before taking time to reflect in the park’s peaceful surroundings.

This event was opened on Friday, May 29 and is open until June 30 to anyone who wants to remember someone special - they don’t need to have been cared for at Weston Park Cancer Centre.

Participants were invited to make a donation of their choosing alongside their ribbon. This enables the charity to fund vital cancer research, treatment enhancements, and support services for the one in two people in our region who will face cancer.

The Bridge of Remembrance was assembled by a group of volunteers from Wake Smith Solicitors.

Emma Clarke, Weston Park Cancer Charity CEO said:”There is a whole community of loved ones who still want to remember their loved ones which is why we are really, really pleased to launch our Ribbons of Hope campaign.”

Dr Satya Garikipati, a consultant clinical oncologist at Weston Park Cancer Centre added: “Our radiotherapy department, within a year, would have given over 70,000 treatments, so it is very busy and an incredible thing that happens at the hospital. Then we bring in the charity and the support provided from the diagnosis to the treatments, the complementary treatments, and beyond. The charity plays a vital part in our patients journey.”

Cllr Andrew Sangar, The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “What a privilege it’s been to unveil Weston Park Cancer Charity’s Ribbons of Hope today.

“The display is a beautiful way to remember loved ones who have passed, while also making a difference to families facing cancer right now.

“With one in two of us set to be diagnosed with cancer, events like this that bring the community together are more important than ever before.”
