In response to “upsetting” acts such as these, the nearby Leadmill has started selling toilet roll at wholesale cost.

Spar confirmed the pricing has now been “rectified”.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “We have been in contact with the independently owned SPAR store on Suffolk Road, Sheffield and confirmed that the pricing has now been rectified.

“This was a decision taken by a junior member of staff and they apologise for this error. SPAR UK is committed to ensure that the local communities we serve are able to get hold of the products they rely on at this difficult time.”

In recent days shops have been overwhelmed by demand as people stock up on items following government advice to avoid all non-essential contact.
