Panic buying has set in across the city, with shoppers reporting empty shelves and large queues in a number of major supermarkets.

This morning’s footage was captured outside Tesco on Spital Hill, Burngreave, as shoppers waited for the doors to open at 6am.

The supermarket, which is normally open 24 hours a day, is closing overnight during the coronavirus pandemic to re-stock shelves, fridges and freezers.

Some supermarkets are now limiting the number of products customers can buy in a bid to prevent supplies running out.

And some stores are offering specific shopping times for vulnerable groups to try to help with a fair distribution of products.

It has been reported that shoppers spent an extra £57.3 million stockpiling items in the first week of March compared to the previous week.
