Five people lose their battle with Covid-19 in South Yorkshire

A further five people have died of coronavirus in South Yorkshire, with a further 97 people succumbing to the chronic illness across the country.

Latest figures released by NHS England on Thursday (March 18) said this brings the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 85,585.

Locally, a person who tested positive for the virus died in Sheffield hospitals, while Doncaster recorded three fatalities.

Meanwhile, Rotherham recorded one fatality but no death has been recorded in Barnsley.

NHS England said the patients were aged between 43 and 99 and all except five, aged between 55 and 89, had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between January 18 and March 17, with the majority being on or after March 15.

There were 20 other deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

NHS England also reported a total of 23,201,466 Covid-19 vaccinations took place in England between December 8 and March 17, a rise of 483,675 on the previous day.
