Sheffield school children ask for more staff at library so they can have more reading lessons

Two pupils from Bankwood Community Primary School, in Gleadless Valley, stood up during a full council meeting and urged elected members to help.

Taking it in turns to speak, they said: "We love to read and regularly visit Newfield Green Library. Unfortunately we can only go when there are volunteers available to read with us.

Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure, said: "Newfield Green is a voluntary library which means all the staff that work there are volunteers. We do have somebody from the council who works there, called Daryl.

"If you are short of volunteers then I will speak to Daryl who goes up their regularly and see what he can do to help the library and people who run it to get more volunteers to come and help you read."

Pupils from the school's student council were on a special visit to the Town Hall and had a tour of the building as well as a question and answer session with cross party councillors before watching the afternoon's debate in the council chamber.
