Councillor Julie Dore, leader of the council, said he made a "massive commitment" to the city over the years.

"When you think of some of the qualities that mark out a good civil servant - diplomacy, pragmatism, charm, calm under pressure, astute and an ability to build good relationships. These are definitely all qualities that make John a great chief executive of the council.

"One thing I have always been impressed is his ability to bring different people together and find common ground, especially when finding solutions.

"We will all miss you greatly both professionally and personally and on behalf of the council we want to thank you very much."

Coun Penny Baker, leader of Sheffield Liberal Democrats, said: "I know John loves this city, I know he loves it well and has no intention of leaving. Not only has he been supportive of the city but us here in the council. Even when he and his family haven't been going through easy times he's been supportive us. I know there's a lot of us in this chamber who have experienced it.

"So personally and on behalf of us, thank you and good luck. Enjoy Christmas and the future."

Mr Mothersole said: "The two things I won't miss are sitting at the front trying not to smile when a good joke is made and looking dispassionately in the face of things I agree with - occasionally from all parties. The second thing I won't miss are those dreaded three words: point of order.

"What I will miss is working with 84 committed people who despite their differences are only here for the good of Sheffield. So thank you for letting me be your chief executive."
