Westbourne School pupil Joey Howells is hitting new heights in sporting excellence after being selected for the England Climbing Team Foundation Programme for climbers under the age of 15.

Joey, a Year 8 student at the Broomhill independent school, was awarded his place based on his impressive performances in national competitions throughout 2025.

Competing against older athletes, Joey reached the finals in several events, demonstrating exceptional talent, resilience and consistency despite being one of the youngest in his category.

The England Climbing Team Foundation Programme, run by the British Mountaineering Council, is designed to identify and nurture young climbers with high potential, supporting them as they progress along the national performance pathway.

Joey will now be competing in further national competitions this year, alongside a couple of international events.

Westbourne Senior School pastoral lead and head of physical education Laura Mirfin said: “Joey’s selection is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to his perseverance and quiet determination.

“He has shown great maturity in balancing his love of climbing with his school life and it has been lovely to see his confidence grow through his dedication to the sport.

“We are extremely proud of Joey and look forward to supporting him as he continues on this exciting journey.”
