End of era as TG Jones confirms closure of landmark Sheffield shop & reveals last day of trading on Fargate
“We know this will be disappointing news for our colleagues, customers, and the local community”
Retailer TG Jones has confirmed it is set to close its shop on a premier Sheffield shopping street, marking the end of an era spanning more than 50 years.
The firm, previously known as WH Smith, has had a presence on Fargate in the city centre for over half a century.

But the retailer has now announced it is to close the shop, as it bids to secure TG Jones’ “long-term future.”
Speaking tonight (Thursday, September 17, 2026), a spokesperson for TG Jones said: "As we work to secure the long-term future of TG Jones, we have confirmed that our Sheffield store will close.
“We know this will be disappointing news for our colleagues, customers, and the local community.
“Our focus now is on supporting those affected and continuing to serve customers throughout the closure period. We would like to thank all of our colleagues in Sheffield for their commitment and the contribution they have made to TG Jones."
Their statement comes after “store closing down” and “everything must go” signs appeared in the Fargate store.
It follows the implementation of TG Jones' court-approved restructuring plan.
The TG Jones spokesperson confirmed their last day of trading at the premises will be on Saturday, January 9, 2027, following a closing down sale.
Modella Capital took over the WH Smith franchise in June 2025, following which they began using the name TG Jones.
Less than a year later, in May 2026, Modella announced it would close 150 of its 450 stores, as part of a rescue plan.
