Sheffield flats: Developer Capital&Centric submits plan for 192 flats that 'meet space standards'

A developer has submitted plans for 192 flats for rent that comply with ‘national space standards’.

Capital&Centric says the £47m development would comprise two blocks of five and six storeys on Fitzwilliam Street. They would all be rentals, ranging from studio to three-bed apartments.

An application to Sheffield City Council states they all comply with national space standards.

It comes after councillors repeatedly raised concerns about the small size of new flats.

The city council agreed to sell the plot to Capital&Centric in October last year.

At the time, city centre ward councillor Martin Phipps said there was “a lot of turnover in the city centre because the accommodation is too small and people don’t have access to green space.”

The ‘Fitzwilliam’ development plot is bounded by Fitzwilliam, Egerton, Milton and Thomas streets.

Part of it is occupied by FW Wallace Ltd, who operate a car repair workshop on a long lease.

Capital&Centric previously said they had negotiated with the firm to buy the lease to allow the whole site to be redeveloped.

In September, a spokesperson for FW Wallace confirmed to The Star they would relocate.

Tom Wilmot, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said they wanted to create a community were people wanted to spend time and with “proper greenery to unwind in.”

The streets around Fitzwilliam would get trees, benches, local artwork, more greenery, better lighting and spots “where people can stop and hang out,” he added.

The firm has already redeveloped the former Eye Witness Works and Ceylon Works on Milton Street and built a block of 97 apartments, duplexes and townhouses on Thomas Street.
