Sheffield Wednesday's new manager could be boosted by return of key duo from injury

New Owls boss Dave Challinor could have two key players back from injury for his first game in charge.

Challinor was in the stands on Sunday for the 1-1 draw against Blackpool. He is set to be officially announced on Monday but a club statement confirmed an agreement had been reached with the 51-year-old former Stockport County manager.

Challinor watched on from the directors’ box as 10-man Wednesday held Blackpool to a draw. They took the lead through Davis Keillor-Dunn but a red card for Sil Swinkels changed the game and the Tangerines equalised late on through Jerry Yates.

Interim boss Matt Hamshaw opted for a back three against but had to change to a four-man defence after the sending-off. They were without experienced pair Di’Shon Bernard and Liam Cooper but they could return for Challinor’s first match, which is likely to be the FA Cup first round trip to Oldham Athletic next Sunday.

Hamshaw told The Star: “Dish wasn’t far off, and Coops wasn’t far off. We just felt it was probably a bit more of a risk not worth taking, and could have led to a bit more.”

Max Lowe came in for particular praise from Hamshaw, saying he was playing through the pain barrier, describing him as ‘carrying a car.’

Hamshaw added: “I think that probably puts his performance in a bit better light. I thought he was outstanding, as a number of them were. So yeah, he put his body on the line, and we're going to need lots of that from now on.”

Wednesday were boosted by the return of Ricardo Santos, who came off the bench in the closing stages, and Jordi Liongola, who was an unused substitute, so they are two more players Challinor should be able to pick from at Boundary Park.
