In a statement, Abbeydale Road-based Bragazzis, which sells Italian fare, said red tape following the end of the transition period has created additional import costs and ‘significant’ delays when bringing products into the UK from Italy.

Delivery times have increased from 11 days to five weeks, owner Matteo Bragazzi said.

The new costs include the price of paying for ‘someone with a clipboard stood around looking at our pasta, making sure it’s pasta’ before writing a report on it, he claimed.

Mr Bragazzi said: “Prices will and have increased and you’ll be waiting a little longer for the things we have been used to for the last 18 years at Bragazzis.

"This said, and regretfully, there will be marginal price increases across many lines.”

Many businesses have faced increased costs and delays following the end of the transition period on 31 December.
