But life is now returning to a row of Sheffield shop buildings in a popular Sheffield city centre street, some eight years since they were last used.

The shops were once home to businesses including the Rare and Racy record shop, and Syd and Mallory's Emporium clothes shop, on Devonshire Street.

But now, after the sites were transformed with a major refurbishment, one of the sites is back up and running, with another expected to open up again soon.

Both are over the road from Devonshire Green car park,

Hairinspire, a unisex hair salon in a building which was once the Syd and Mallory's Emporium clothes store, is already up and running.

And its owner understands the shop next door will soon open again, with plans for it to open as a restaurant. It is expected to open in mid May.

Work appears to still be ongoing to get the restaurant site ready.

Amir Aran opened Hairinspire for the first time on Saturday, and said he had had his eye on the unit that he has now moved into for as long as five years ago.

Before opening his own salon, he had worked at the nearby Stylist Studio, on West Street.

He said: “We’re a unisex salon, we do ladies and gents hair.”

Asked how business was going so far he added: “So far, so good.”

He said Hairinspire was the first salon he has run himself, but he had previously worked at several barber shops in Sheffield, and before that in Liverpool.
