Record shop and bar set to open on high profile Sheffield shopping street

New store will move into hair venue

Sheffield is set for a new record shop on one of its traditional main shopping streets.

And the venue will also have a bar, under plans which have just been given the green light.

Sheffield Council has approved planning permission for the shop, which will sell vinyl records, on Ecclesall Road, in a building which has in recent years been a hair studio, called Freestylers.

It will see the Ecclesall Road venue taken over by the Sheffield dance music organisation, United Underground, which has a history of running jungle, and drum and bass, music events

A bar will be a side function in addition to the shop, and may be used for events related to the shop.

In a report accompanying the planning application, Sheffield Council officers had stated: “The development site is part of a traditional Victorian row of properties with commercial properties to the ground floor and residential properties to the first floor.”

It described the plan as for the change of use of the ground floor to a vinyl record shop with bar as a side activity for on-site consumption and occasional customer listening events.

They added: “The proposal will see the re-use of the vacant unit a

“The proposal will result in no harm to the character of the street scene or residential amenity subject to suitably worded conditions.”

Unity Underground was founded by Rach and King Chuga in 2022.

Based in Sheffield, they run monthly podcast/radio shows, live events and have plans for a record label too

They stated on their website: “Unity Underground was created based on a passion for the music and a sense of wanting to give something back to the scene that founders Rac & King Chuga have been part of since the early 90s.”

Ecclesall Road has traditionally been one of Sheffield’s major shopping roads, and the site of the new shop is around 200m from Endcliffe Park.
