Red Bull Studios has launched the ‘Grime-A-Side’ project, pitting MCs from Sheffield against seven other cities including Manchester and Leeds.

The aim is to find the best city for grime music – an evolution of electronic music that takes influences from genres such as drum and bass, garage and jungle.

Sheffield MC Kannan will lead a team also featuring Kdot and Ldizz as they record a ‘cypher’, or freestyle rap. That will be put up against another city online, with the public asked to vote for their favourite.

The teams with the most votes will advance to the semi-final to battle it out for a place in the final.

Sheffield team captain Kannan has featured on BBC Radio 1Xtra on a track called ‘Fire Burning’, while his most famous track ‘Grime’ came out in and has been played almost 700,000 times on YouTube.

The three members of the Sheffield team regularly work with famous city names Coco and Toddla T, and are featured in a number of videos.
