Murder investigation launched after man's body found in Sheffield moorland

A murder investigation has been launched after a body of a man was found in moorland near Sheffield.

The 34-year-old man’s body was found in moorland off the A628 near Woodhead Tunnels on Monday, Derbyshire Police have announced tonight.

The death of the man, who is from Rotherham, is being treated as suspicious after a post-mortem exam was carried out.

Derbyshire Police are now appealing for witnesses to any suspect activity in the area to come forward.

The force’s announcement said: “We’ve launched a murder investigation after the body of a man was found on moorland off the A628 near Woodhead Tunnels on Monday.

“A post mortem exam was carried out yesterday and we’re now treating the 34-year-old Rotherham man’s death as suspicious.

“Did you see a vehicle or any suspicious activity on the slip road off the A628 or the car park near Woodhead Tunnels over the weekend?”

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Cooper, who is leading the investigation, said: “I’d like to hear from anyone who saw a vehicle, or anyone acting suspiciously, on the slip road off the A628 or the car park near Woodhead Tunnels at any time between 7am on Saturday August 20 and 11am on Monday August 22.”

Search teams are continuing to examine the scene and other enquiries are continuing both locally and in neighbouring forces.
