Hundreds back city airport petition

ALMOST 600 people have signed a petition organised by South Yorkshire Federation of Small Business calling for redevelopment of Sheffield City Airport to be halted.

The organisation wants an independent public inquiry to be held to reassess the airport’s viability before plans go ahead to dig up the runway and build a business park called Blue Skies.

FSB regional chairman, Gordon Millward, said: “In a sane world anyone creating an enterprise zone from scratch on a blank sheet of paper would put a regional airport in the middle of it, given the option to do so.

“In the east of Sheffield we have a situation where a new enterprise zone is taking shape with a ready-made airport in its centre.”

Stewart Dalton, of Westfield, and a member of Sheffield City Airport Movement which campaigned against the closure of the facility in 2008, said: “We are very pleased the federation has also seen the sense in keeping this vital transport asset. We have no doubt that in the future, Sheffield City Airport could be of great benefit to the entire region.

“We really hope that with the weight of a large membership of concerned small businesses, Sheffield can put to rights a wrong-headed decision to allow closure and redevelopment.”
