The Veteran Friendly Framework was designed for use in residential settings for older people, helping care providers to offer appropriate support for the thousands of veterans living in care homes across England.

A free-to-access programme funded by Royal Star & Garter and the Royal British Legion, it supports providers in identifying veterans and their partners in order to meet their wellbeing needs effectively.

In addition, it helps to address social isolation and signpost statutory and charitable services as well as creating a culture of understanding for those people who have served.

Coun Fox visited Sheffcare’s Springwood home in Shirecliffe and Burnt Tree Croft in Upperthorpe, where she was told how the teams from both homes had already achieved the Framework’s bronze award.

And she heard how the scheme was now set to be introduced at the charity’s Deerlands, Knowle Hill, Cotleigh and Valley Wood homes in October, with all other homes scheduled to be on board by next Spring.

“Following the positive response at Springwood and Burnt Tree Croft, we’re really really pleased to be taking this project further and eventually into all our homes,” said Sheffcare Chief Executive Claire Rintoul.

“With the support of the Veteran Friendly Framework, we’re creating more opportunities for people to share their stories, reflect on their experiences, and celebrate the important contribution they’ve made to society."
