Burton Street Foundation opens new underwater sensory room
Burton Street Foundation has introduced a new Sensory Room, designed to offer people with disabilities a tranquil environment filled with vivid colours and soothing sounds.

The room’s underwater theme combines visual effects and music to craft an immersive space aimed at fostering relaxation and wellbeing.
The concept was realised through the efforts of Jill Martin, the Foundation’s in-house designer, whose dedication helped bring the project to life. Integral to the creation process was the Burton Street Client Board, who contributed ideas to ensure the design met the desires and needs of those who would use the space.

Through collaboration between clients and staff, the Sensory Room was tailored to reflect the preferences of its future users. Elaine Purkiss, a member of the Client Board, officially opened the facility by cutting the ribbon. She said: “I was really proud to cut the ribbon. I think the room is lovely, and I feel brilliant when I’m in there. As the Client Board, we put our heads together to decide what we wanted to see in the room. It’s great to see how it’s turned out.”
Jill Martin explained the creative vision behind the project: “We worked hard to create a calm, underwater world for our clients to explore. It’s become a real ‘wow’ room, and I’m amazed by the transformation. More than anything, I hope our clients love it as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it, and that it gives them a safe, peaceful space.”
