Toni Tomlinson, Principal at Aughton Primary Academy, has had her research, Developing Exploratory Talk in Year 5 Science and Mathematics, published in the Camtree Digital Library as part of the Leading Education Improvement Through Oracy-Oriented Inquiry programme.

The research explored the use of purposeful classroom talk with Year 5 pupils in Science and Mathematics and how giving children opportunities to discuss ideas, explain their reasoning, listen to others and think together can support their learning and understanding.

For Aughton Primary Academy, the achievement reflects a wider commitment to continually developing teaching and learning and creating an environment in which both pupils and staff can thrive.

Toni Tomlinson, Principal at Aughton Primary Academy, said: “Having the research published is something I’m incredibly proud of, but the most important part of the project has always been what we can learn from it for our children.

“We want our pupils to become confident, curious learners who feel able to share their ideas, question, discuss and learn from one another. As educators, it is equally important that we continue to learn, reflect on our practice and explore how we can make children’s experiences in the classroom even stronger.

“I’m particularly proud that work involving learning here at Aughton can now contribute to the wider education community.”

The publication also demonstrates the importance placed on professional learning and evidence-informed practice within Aston Community Education Trust, of which Aughton Primary Academy is part.

The Trust encourages leaders and staff across its academies to continue developing their expertise and to translate professional learning into positive experiences for pupils in the classroom.

Toni’s research is now openly available through the Camtree Digital Library.
