The breathtaking Peak District bus escape you can board straight from Meadowhall for free

Passengers can spend an afternoon wandering through the historic lanes of Eyam

The bustling concourse and bright shop windows of Meadowhall seem an unlikely starting point for a countryside escape. Yet, just outside the shopping centre lies the departure point for Stagecoach Service 65 - a scenic route that quietly swaps city bustle for sweeping limestone dales, ancient stone villages and rolling Peak District moorland.

There are no early-morning scrambles or tight connections here. Passengers board at a gentle pace, pass in hand, settling into a window seat as the bus glides past Sheffield’s urban fringe before the landscape opens up into sweeping green vistas.

Best of all, for eligible English National Concessionary Travel Pass holders, the entire cross-county journey costs nothing at all.

As the route climbs into the hills, asphalt gives way to drystone walls and expansive heather-clad moorland. Navigating narrow lanes and valley ridges, the journey takes in dramatic scenery alongside plenty of opportunities to hop off and explore.

Passengers can spend an afternoon wandering through the historic lanes of Eyam - the historic "Plague Village" - famous for its 17th-century heritage, quaint cottages, and walking trails leading out to the moors, admire the imposing fourteenth-century church in Tideswell, or stroll through the elegant Georgian gardens of Buxton.

With countless countryside walks and traditional village pubs dotting the entire corridor, it is an easy route to pause, stretch your legs and enjoy lunch by a log fire.

The route also skirts the edges of the Chatsworth Estate - famed as Jane Austen’s inspiration for Pemberley in Pride & Prejudice - passing through valley folds where stone villages meet quiet riverbanks. Whether hopping off for warm scones and tea at local teashops, walking along public footpaths or enjoying the scenic ride from start to finish, the 65 proves world-class travel experiences don’t require a car key - just a concession pass and a window seat.

The campaign forms part of a wider effort by Stagecoach to encourage eligible pass holders to make the most of their free travel. Recent research by the operator revealed that 12% of eligible people have never claimed their concession pass or don't know they qualify, while 33% admit they underutilise local bus networks.

“Mention public transport to most people and boring everyday commutes spring to mind. Scenes of stuffy, packed vehicles at rush hour and noisy traffic jams,” says John Young, Commercial Director for Stagecoach Yorkshire. “But not every bus journey is built for utility, and we’re on a mission to change that perception and inspire journeys, especially for eligible concession pass holders - which covers over 60s in Scotland and Wales, and state-pension age residents across England.”

Concessionary travel passes are available to state-pension-age residents across England, as well as over-60s in Scotland and Wales.
