Sheffield pub cancels well-loved Bonfire Night event after growing too big to manage
“The sheer number of people attending has made the evening much harder to manage”
A Sheffield pub has cancelled its popular free Bonfire Night event saying it has grown too big to manage.
The Crown Inn, Totley, is calling off its annual fireworks display after a decade of “fantastic nights” over spiralling costs - sadly brought on because it is so well loved.

In a post to its official Facebook page, the pub’s team says the night now draws so many families it has become too difficult to safely manage and “less enjoyable” as a result.
“After a great deal of thought, we’ve made the tough decision not to hold our Bonfire Night event this year,” the post on October 5 reads.
“Watching the event grow into something so popular has been something we’re incredibly proud of.
“Unfortunately, that growth has also brought challenges. Alongside rising insurance costs, the event now needs more resources than we can provide.
“Over the last couple of years, there have been times when the sheer number of people attending has made the evening much harder to manage and, if we’re honest, less enjoyable for the team putting it on.
“It’s sad to reach this point after around 10 brilliant years, but in many ways it shows just how successful and popular Bonfire Night became. As disappointing as the decision is, we genuinely believe it’s the right one.”
The team said ticketing the event is also not a solution as non-paying customers would likely still line the roads outside the pub.
Last year, the Crown’s event featured a bonfire, fireworks, hot food, an outdoor bar, sweets and a live DJ.
