5. Sean Bean
The award-winning actor grew up in Handsworth, Sheffield, and attended Brook Comprehensive School. His dad Brian was a steel plater with his own business, and after Sean left school with just two O-levels he began working at his father’s fabrication company while studying welding one day a week at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology. 6. Joe Elliott
The lead singer of Def Leppard attended King Edward VII School but the band's first gig was at Westfield School in Mosborough, Sheffield. Joe Elliott worked at the Osborne-Mushett Tools steel factory in Sheffield from the age of 15 to 19. He was reportedly sacked for playing cricket in the basement and breaking a window. 7. Helen Sharman

8. Peter Stringfellow
The late businessman and nightclub owner was born in Sheffield and grew up in Pitsmoor. He attended Pye Bank Church of England Primary School, and then went to Burngreave Secondary School for one year after failing his 11 Plus exam. After eventually passing the exam, he moved to Sheffield Central Technical College, which he left at the age of 15 with a 4th grade Technical Diploma. He had many jobs before finding his niche as a businessman, including working as an assistant tie salesman at Austin Reed and as an apprentice in the Merchant Navy. Photo: ShowBizIreland
