Sheffield welcomes back nineties indie-rock band Space - Review
The evening kickstarted with legendary Space tune Avenging Angels
Sheffield welcomed back nineties indie-rock band Space to the Sidney and Matilda on Friday, September 4.

The band kick started their latest 2026 tour - Ten Neurotic Fairytales with support band Poor Things.
The five-piece support band Poor Things, played a 45 minute set which comprised of ten amazing songs rich in energy and emotion ahead of Space. I especially enjoyed their third track Sunset City. Their vibe is considered very unique sounding with glam rock components with lead singer Jimi donning a beautiful crushed velvet suite and fantastic dramatic eye makeup.
Lead singer Tommy Scott ahead of the gig described lead singer Jimi Boswell of Poor Things ‘he’s a mini version of David Bowie, like the cure but not gothic! They have great stage presence and there a great fit for the tour.’ What a fantastic endorsement from Space.
At 9pm Space took to the stage, with Tommy is his signature orange velvet jacket and delivered a high-energy set with a staggering 20 tracks over 1.5hr. The atmosphere was electric with their audience singing and dancing to old and new tunes from their latest album Ten Neurotic Fairytales.
The evening kickstarted with legendary Space tune Avenging Angels, and was intermingled with new tracks from their latest album. New song included: 35 Thousand Volts, Wildfire, and Light it up to name but a few. Classic Space tune also included Ballad of Tom Jones, Female of the Species and without hesitation firm favourite of the evening Neighbourhood. I danced and smiled all evening. I was definitely catapulted back to 1996.
I was fortunate to speak to lead singer of Space Tommy Scott ahead of the tour. ‘We absolutely loved it last year – we love playing Sheffield.’
When asked about inspiration for the new album Tommy confirmed ‘The songs are neurotic – the neurosis comes out in the lyrics- they seem more fairytale like.’
Phil Hartley added ‘ its quite theatrical in places - it has very different element in our new album.’
Tommy Scott concluded ‘ Everytime we do a new albums - we do hits, and drop a new song in - and mix it up. The new songs are just as good as the old stuff, they’re groovy and dancey - you can have a good time to them’.
Their latest album - Ten Neurotic Fairytales is available on pre-order and features 10 new songs. Noted historically for their undefineable genre, Space have a very varied audience and attract teenagers to punks and every other label in-between. Tommy stated ‘ why should I stick to just one genre of music - its too limiting’.
Audience members had travelled from Worksop, Leeds and all over South Yorkshire to see Space for the evening.
It was a very enjoyable evening. I even walked away after been gifted two vintages LP’s and a signed Tshirt. I was super excited to have had the privilege to chat to my favourite band Space. I cannot wait to hear their new album in February 2027.
