Reverend and the Makers frontman Jon McClure on 'Silence is Talking' becoming England's World Cup anthem

“It’s been an amazing couple of weeks...”

It’s the undisputed anthem of England’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

‘Silence is Talking’ by Sheffield icons Reverend and the Makers has been heard in every ground that Thomas Tuchel’s team have played in on their road to the semi-finals.

The undeniable trumpet, the catchy tune, the nostalgic vibes. They all add up to provide a World Cup anthem for the ages.

And now, speaking before a slot at Sheffield’s Fan City on Devonshire green before England kick-off against Argentina, Reverend frontman Jon McCure has spoken about the song “taking on a life of its own.”

He said: ““It’s been an amazing couple of weeks with Silence is Talking.

“It was re-recorded as part of a Steve Bracknall advert campaign. Older viewers will know it from the Marmite advert and Low Rider by War.

“It became a hit for us in 2009 and is a firm festival favourite and is a song by which we close out sets.

“But it’s just taken on a life of its own since we recorded it for the World Cup and in the quarter final we heard it 18 times in the stadium. There are all these famous people singing it now which is wild.”

The 2009 Reverend hit, that samples ‘Low Rider’ by War, was rerecorded before the World Cup campaign kicked off to help promote Jon’s brother Chris’ fictional internet character and viral sensation Steve Bracknall.
